Planting tomatoes for early and healthy harvest from PTL

Planting tomatoes for early and healthy harvest from PTL

I love being part of Pittsburgh Today Live on KDKA-TV, I’ve been lucky enough to be on the show for over 15 years. This week it’s all about planting tomatoes not only to harvest the first fruit of the season, but also to keep the plants healthy. The last three seasons have been wet and tomatoes are susceptible to fungal diseases. Here are tips to keep those plants looking good all season long regardless of how much rain falls.

  • I watched today’s show on tomato planting and I have a question… you were talking about mulching the tomatoes and it looks like straw. Is that straw that you put around them?

    • Hi Kathie,

Yes, in the veggie garden I use straw, but you can use anything you want. I like straw in that garden, but grass clippings, shredded leaves and other mulches would work too. Thanks for watching!

    • Hi Nicole,

Any insecticidal soap will work on controlling soft bodied, sucking insects like aphids, spider mites or whiteflies. The spray needs to cover the pest to be effective. Hope that helps.
